PROJECTS
Christina de Middel has undertaken and published many projects, her most famous being the project 'Afronauts'.
In this project de Middel created a series of images showing the story of the Zambian Space Agency. Something I found really interesting about the project is that none of the images were actually shot in Zambia, or even in Africa.
De Middel really creatively uses scenes from her surroundings and creates them into otherworldly sets. An example of this being done during the project is the use of sand, making it look like moon dust. We also link sand to the idea of the deserts of Africa.
She also uses traditional African clothing, patterns and colours on the models for her images as a way to reinforce (??? reinforce that theyre african??work on this bit please).
During an interview about the project, de Middel said that she wanted to create something different than the stereotypical images of Africa, that she wanted a positive story to be associated with Africa.
